We will examine how STEM education in Kenya can contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, while also discussing the benefits and drawbacks of this approach.
In Kenya, The STEM Model School Program was launched in 2016 to promote education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Its goals include enhancing student engagement in these fields, improving teaching methods, fostering innovation, and preparing students for future careers in STEM-related areas.
The main goal is to reduce the mismatch between the demand for technical skills in the job market and the supply of those skills. It aims to make sure that graduates from schools have the right skills that employers are looking for.
The Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) serves as the implementing institution for the Ministry of Education, responsible for transforming 102 selected public secondary schools into STEM model schools. This includes two secondary schools from each of the 47 counties and one regional school from each of the eight selected, chosen based on performance, locality, and input from local stakeholders.
